Manager of InfoAmazonia.orgInternews Network

Biography

A two-time Knight International Journalism Fellow, Gustavo Faleiros is an environmental journalist and
media trainer who specializes in data-driven journalism. Currently he is the manager of the Earth Journalism Network, an organization supporting geojournalism and environmental reporting in developing countries. In 2012, Faleiros launched InfoAmazonia, a digital map that uses satellite and other publicly available data to monitor the Amazon rainforest. Infoamazonia started from previous activity of the Amazon Communications Network, which trained journalists and produced 200 stories in the region. The network sprang from his earlier work at the Brazilian environmental news site O Eco, where he introduced the use of satellite images and interactive maps. Nowadays, InfoAmazonia has created its own Lab of developers and technologists. The Lab has generated two open-source softwares (JEO and YBY) and the first Geojournalism. In 2014, InfoAmazonia received support from Google to install sensors to monitor water quality in the Brazilian Amazon. Faleiros began his career as a reporter for Valor Econômico, Brazil’s main financial newspaper. He studied journalist at the Catholic University of São Paulo and earned a master’s degree on Environmental Politics from King’s College London.
