Alexander Fischer

Biography

Alex Fischer's research focuses on drinking water security, application of geospatial information systems, and sustainable resource governance.

His current applied research explores how new innovations in water infrastructure sensors and smart-meters can generate value (expected and unexpected) and improve decision-making systems across the multiple levels of users, communities and government agencies. This research in rural Bangladesh focuses on institutional behavior and responses to the multiple risks of water quality, financial sustainability and infrastructure reliability.

Fischer previously worked at the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN), the Earth Institute at Columbia University. He led applied research programs supporting the Office of E-Governance within the Government of Haiti develop integrated socio-economic and environmental monitoring platforms and supported the establishment of the GIS Department within the Environmental Protection Agency of the Government of Sierra Leone. He also worked with the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) on integrating geospatial data into the UN SDG monitoring platforms, with a focus on building capacity of g7+ fragile states. He holds degrees from Columbia University and Wesleyan University.
