Paul Biondich

Biography

Paul Biondich is a pediatrician, senior medical informatics researcher and social entrepreneur whose interests include health informatics interventions in resource-constrained environments and open communities of practice. He is the co-founder and leader of OpenMRS (http://openmrs.org), an open source medical record system platform to support underserved populations, which is currently deployed in over 80 countries throughout the world.

His current focus is in developing an international ecosystem of implementers around the OpenMRS platform to support the many countries throughout Africa and SE Asia who are in the process of implementing the record system platform as a national standard.

Dr. Biondich is also very active in international health information architecture development efforts, through his leadership of a new community of practice that supports national planning and implementation of health information sharing architectures (OpenHIE).

In his leadership role of the Global Health Informatics program at the Regenstrief Institute, he participates in a wide variety of strategically important R&D health informatics initiatives for PEPFAR, Gates Foundation, CDC, USAID, WHO, and GIZ. All of these projects provide a rich substrate that allows Paul to study these unique environments and learn the effectiveness of various health informatics interventions applied to these settings.
