#GoodNews December: Highlights from Social Entrepreneurs in 2019

As the end of 2019 approaches, we’ve gathered up the good news: the progress and accomplishments of Skoll social entrepreneurs, hard at work on the world’s thorniest problems. We are proud to partner with each of the 100+ organizations in our portfolio as they enter into new collaborations, deepen their impact, and fundamentally shift society towards health, justice, peace, and prosperity for all.

Foundation for Ecological Security

Illustration: Foundation for Ecological Security partnered with six Indian State Governments and 83 NGO and NGO networks to protect the rural poor's rights to 6.5 million acres of common lands.Spread across diverse ecological and social geographies, the Foundation for Ecological Security works towards conservation of land and natural resources in India through the collective action of local communities.


VillageReach

Illustration: VillageReach, in collaboration with Swoop Aero and the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ministry of Health, successfully delivered vaccines by drone, turning a six-hour round trip into a 20-minute deliveryVillageReach works to transform healthcare delivery to reach everyone, including those at the last mile. Read more on its drone initiative.


Health Care Without Harm

Illustration: Health Care Without Harm secured commitments from 200 health care institutions in 31 countries to reduce their climate emissions by 34 million metric tons a year—the equivalent of taking 7.2 million cars off the road.Health Care Without Harm works to transform health care worldwide so that it reduces its environmental footprint, and becomes a community anchor for sustainability and a leader in the global movement for environmental health and justice.


mothers2mothers

Illustration with red background of the continent of Africa and a superimposed red ribbon with text overlay: mothers2mothers' latest impact data shows it has reached more than 894,837 new clients --including women, children, adolescents, and men--and achieved virtual elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV for the fifth year in a row.mothers2mothers employ women living with HIV to work as frontline health workers. These “Mentor Mothers” enable access to healthcare, enhance retention in care, and ensure adherence to treatment.


Amazon Conservation Team

Amazon Conservation Team now works with close to 60 indigenous and tribal groups across tropical South America to protect rainforests and strengthen traditional culture. Amazon Conservation Team sees a future where healthy tropical forests and thriving local communities exist in harmonious relationship with each other, contributing to the well-being of the planet.


Gram Vikas

Illustration of a cyclone battering a tropical island with text: Gram Vikas responded to cyclones in the Indian state of Odisha, providing immediate food relief to 1,200 families and partnering with UNDP and PwC India Foundation to support livelihoods rehabilitation in 1,400 households Gram Vikas partners with rural communities to increase inclusion and equity by building their capabilities, strengthening community institutions, and mobilizing resources. Here’s a snapshot of their 40th year.


Barefoot College

Fundación Paraguaya

Illustration: Fundación Paraguaya expanded its Poverty Stoplight methodology to Ecuador where the Government and the private sector are reaching 3500 families and plan to reach 4000 additional families in 2020.Fundación Paraguaya develops and implements practical, innovative, and sustainable solutions to eliminate poverty through microcredit and entrepreneurial and financial education. Apopo

Illustration of a field cleared of mines: APOPO and Cambodian Mine Action Centre found over 46,000 landmines and unexploded ordnances, releasing over 18.63 million sq. meters of safe land back to communities in Cambodia.APOPO researches, develops, and implements animal detection technology, most notably HeroRAT detection systems, for humanitarian purposes, such as demining and tuberculosis detection. Citizen Schools

Gaia Amazonas

Gaia Amazonas is committed to the protection of biological and cultural diversity, and the future of the Amazon rainforest. Their advocacy work with the North Amazon Alliance, a coalition of eight NGOs with a long history in the north of the Amazon River region, is building a civil society strategy to ensure that the Amazon continues to function as a key system in regulating the global climate.
