Biography

Foundation leader, public health physician, university professor, social change practitioner and award-winning author. Career rooted in front-line medical and humanitarian work. Extensive work with public sector, business, civil society and philanthropy to build progressive partnerships for change.

Currently Head of Foundations, World Economic Forum and Director, Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship. Previously, Founding Director, Bertha Centre for Social Innovation, University of Cape Town.

Rhodes Scholar, Archbishop Tutu Fellow; Fellow of Skoll Centre and Geneva Centre for Philanthropy. Book with Cynthia Rayner, “The Systems Work of Social Change” won Terry McAdam Award for Best Non-Profit Management Book 2022.

MBChB University of Cape Town (Gold Medal); MSc Public Health London; MBA University of Oxford (Saïd Prize).

Originally from Cape Town, now in Geneva with his wife and two boys. Swims regularly in Lac Leman. Board member, International Ice Swimming Association.
