Celebrating Jimmy Carter’s 100th Birthday

October 2, 2024

In recognition of former President Jimmy Carter’s 100th birthday on Oct. 1, the Skoll Foundation is delighted to revisit the timeless insights and lessons he has shared with our community as the 2018 recipient of the Skoll Global Treasure Award. President Carter was the first American to receive the honor, which is awarded to an individual or group who displays significant achievement and integrity in addressing global challenges.

President Carter’s unwavering optimism, longstanding commitment to gender and racial equity, and unshakeable faith in American democracy continue to serve as an inspiration for us as we pursue our vision of a sustainable world of peace and prosperity for all.

A Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2002, President Carter has reflected on the importance of more women assuming leadership positions, on the incredible potential of youth-led social movements, and on the value of being “proximate” to one another as we seek to understand and connect to our fellow citizens.

Over the past century, President Carter—who grew up in the segregated South during the Great Depression and battled in World War II before serving as the 39th commander in chief—has witnessed the power of unity in tackling the world’s challenges. As we work to address the obstacles we now face, he reminds us that though we must embrace change, the principles that guide us—honesty, equality, respect—remain the same.

“Don’t give up hope,” he tells us.
