Session Description

Social entrepreneurs increasingly report that access to human capital is one of the biggest challenges they face. This raises a whole host of challenges around recruiting and retaining the right talent to ensure effective implementation and impact on the ground. This experienced panel will discuss both the challenges and opportunities that accompany growth as well as effective strategies for attracting and keeping the human resources you need to succeed.

    Executive Director, Riders for Health International
    Ngwarati is the Executive Director of Riders for Health International and has led the reestablishment of Riders for Health international office working together with Riders programs in Africa. Recently he has led Riders for Health Ebola response in Liberia and is leading Riders for Health post Ebola systems strengthening working in partnership with Ministry of Health, General Services Agency and International partners. Prior to this set-up in Liberia, Ngwarati has led the set-up of Riders Kenya programme and was part of the set-up of all existing Riders programmes (The Gambia, Nigeria, Lesotho, Zambia, Malawi and Zimbabwe). Ngwarati joined Riders for Health in 1996, he has worked up the organisation from being a motorcycle mechanic to be a Country Director for Riders for Health Zimbabwe programme and now as the Executive Director of Riders . Ngwarati’ s development and growth from the work floor, many years of working in Africa and the United Kingdom gives him a unique understanding and experience of the practical work delivery, administrative work to support transport and a deeper understanding to solve issues and problems as they occur in any environment in the world. Ngwarati is a holder of MSc in International Logistics and Supply Chain Management attained from the University of South Wales and is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute and Logistics (CILT UK), a holder of a Bachelor of Commerce degree with Specialisation in Transport Economics from University of South Africa (UNISA) and a Skilled worker Class 1 in motorcycle mechanics in addition to other business related courses from Leadership Trust and Said Business School.

    Founder and Co-CEO, CoGenerate
    Marc Freedman is Founder and Co-CEO of CoGenerate (formerly Encore.org), and a faculty member at The Yale School of Management. Freedman is the author of five books, including most recently, How to Live Forever: The Enduring Power of Connecting the Generations. He co-founded Experience Corps to mobilize people over 50 to improve the prospects of low-income elementary schools, and the Purpose Prize, an annual award for social innovators in the second half of life. Freedman is an Ashoka Senior Fellow; was named a Social Entrepreneur of the Year by the World Economic Forum; and has been honored with the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship. A former visiting fellow at Stanford University, King’s College, London, and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, he holds an MBA from the Yale. He lives with his wife and three children in the San Francisco Bay Area.

    Deepti is the Co-Director of New_ Public. Her work has focused on the intersection of social media, community organizing and leadership development over the last two decades. Prior to New_ Public, she set up Meta's New Product Experimentation team and established Meta’s Community Partnerships team to build products (namely, Groups), programs, and partnerships that support community leaders. Deepti is a graduate of the Harvard Kennedy School and the Wharton Business School and holds a bachelors degree in Psychology. She is a TED Fellow, an Aspen Institute First Movers Fellow and Ideas Scholar, and her work has been featured in multiple publications.

    Director (2009-2016), Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship
    Dr. Pamela Hartigan was Director of the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship at Said Business School at the University of Oxford from 2009 until her passing in 2016. She was also founding partner of Volans Ventures, an organization focused on building innovative scalable solutions to challenges affecting our future. Prior to starting Volans, Dr. Hartigan spent eight years as the Founding Managing Director of the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship, a sister organization of the World Economic Forum, where she was also a member of the Managing Board. Of Ecuadorian origin, Dr. Hartigan first came to the United States at 17 years of age to study at Georgetown University; she went on to complete a PhD in human developmental psychology at the Catholic University of America. Throughout her career, she held varied leadership positions in multilateral organizations and educational institutions, as well as in entrepreneurial ventures. She was responsible for conceptualizing and creating new organizations, departments, and programs across a variety of institutions and platforms. Dr. Hartigan was a frequent lecturer on entrepreneurship and innovation at graduate business schools in the USA, Europe, and Asia, and an Adjunct Professor at the Columbia Business School and at the University of Technology Sydney. She co-authored a book with John Elkington, founder of SustainAbility (UK), entitled The Power of Unreasonable People: How Entrepreneurs Create Markets to Change the World, which was published by Harvard Business Press in 2008. She was a trustee of social investment organizations, publicly listed companies, and social impact focused organizations around the world. Dr. Pamela Hartigan died on August 12, 2016, at her home in France.

    Managing Director - M-KOPA Mobility and M-KOPA Labs, M-Kopa Solar
    David Damberger is the Founder and Managing Director of M-KOPA Mobility. David has been with M-KOPA for over 11-yrs and was formerly the Chief Strategy and Data Officer and also the MD of their Nigeria, Uganda, and Tanzania markets. Previously David worked as a corporate strategy consultant in telecom, was a Senior Director at Engineers Without Borders Canada, a co-founder of an online ethical shopping company and started the world’s first Fairly-traded Ice Hockey Puck company. David holds a B.Sc. in Engineering and Entrepreneurship from the University of Calgary and an MBA from the University of Oxford (Skoll Scholar). He also has a popular TED talk on “Admitting Failure".
