Biography
Dr. Avila Kilmurray has worked in Northern Ireland since 1975, in both the community and women's movements. She was appointed Women's Officer for the island of Ireland for United - the Union in 1989 and served on the Executive Committee of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions. Avila also served as a Board member of the Industrial Development Board for Northern Ireland. From 1994-2014, Avila was CEO of the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland, managing EU PEACE Programme funding for the re-integration of political ex-prisoners, victims/survivors of violence and grassroots community projects.
Avila is currently supporting the work of SCI (Social Change Initiative) on peacebuilding and refugee/migrant rights initiatives. She has served on the Board of the International Fund for Ireland and is currently on the Board of the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust.
Avila was a founder member of the Northern Ireland Coalition and on its negotiating team for the Good Friday Agreement.
