Biography
Dr. Denis Mukwege is a gynecologist, surgeon, and the founder and president of Panzi Hospital & Foundation in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo. Over the last 25 years, Dr. Mukwege and his team have treated more than 100,000 survivors of sexual violence and women with severe gynecological injuries. Dr. Mukwege is an outspoken advocate for the rights of survivors and for an end to rape as a weapon of war. His action and dedication have been recognized worldwide with various awards including the United Nations Human Rights Prize (2008), the Sakharov Prize (2014), and the Nobel Peace Prize (2018). He has authored numerous research publications as well as a biography, The Power of Women.
