Fred de Sam Lazaro

Biography

Fred de Sam Lazaro is a correspondent for the PBS News Hour and director of the Under-Told Stories Project at the University of St Thomas, a program aimed at using storytelling to enhance classroom learning.
He was a regular contributor and substitute anchor for PBS' long-running Religion and Ethics Newsweekly and also directed films from India and the Democratic Republic of Congo for the acclaimed documentary series, Wide Angle. Over nearly four decades, Fred has reported from 70 countries on global health and the myriad consequences of resource poverty, with an emphasis on social innovation and entrepreneurship and solutions-oriented narratives.
Fred is the recipient of three honorary doctorates, numerous journalism awards and media fellowships from the Kaiser Family Foundation and the University of Michigan. He serves on the board of Sahan Journal, an immigrant- and BIPOC-focused news non-profit and the Hill Monastic Museum and Library.
