Biography

Popularly tagged as “the voice of mental health”, Hauwa Ojeifo publicly identifies as a person with a psychosocial disability. She is the Executive Director at She Writes Woman (SWW); an award-winning movement that gives a voice to mental health in Nigeria.

In February 2020, she became the first person with a mental health condition to testify in that capacity before the Nigerian National Assembly on the rights of persons with psychosocial disabilities.

Hauwa has presented key human rights findings to the UN Committee Against Torture, UN Regional Consultation Against Institutionalisation, and the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

She is a Mandela Washington Fellowship Awardee, 2020 Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Goalkeepers Global Goals Changemaker Award winner. Human Rights Watch Marca Bristo Fellow and Diana Samarasan Disability Rights Advocacy Awardee.

In 2024, Melinda French-Gates awarded her a $20 million fund for women's health and wellbeing.
