Biography

I was trained as an electrical engineer in the late 1960s with an interest in computing. This was in an era in which most universities weren't yet offering computer science. I also majored in philosophy and classical languages. My initial interests were in computer-aided instruction. In the early 1970s I worked for Tymshare, a commercial time-sharing provider and provided services for silicon valley engineering firms, such as Lockheed, Xerox PARC, Alza, and Hewlett-Packard. I cofounded two startups that engaged in minicomputer, then microcomputer software development. Then, for the next 30 years I was an independent consultant specializing in enterprise architecture. I did many projects with companies like IBM, Prudential, and Bank of America. For the last 10 years of my career I returned to my first love, combining software with education. Finally before retirement I worked closely with the leading standards body, IMS Global, on learning system component integration.
