Biography

Dr Kopano Matlwa Mabaso is a Senior Program Officer, Health, Africa at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Prior to BMGF, Kopano led Grow Great - a campaign aimed at galvanizing South Africa towards a national commitment to zero stunting by 2030. Kopano is Grow Great’s founding Executive Director, and in this capacity was responsible for the strategic design, development and direction of the campaign.

Kopano is a medical doctor by training (University of Cape Town) with a Master’s Degree in Global Health Science and a DPhil (PhD) in Population Health, both from the University of Oxford where she attended as a Rhodes Scholar.

Outside of her public health work, Kopano is an award-winning fiction writer and her novels, “Coconut”, “Spilt Milk” and “Period Pain” have been translated into close to a dozen international languages. Kopano’s debut novel, “Coconut” is currently being adapted into a feature film.
