Michael is the Founding President and CEO of Forest Trends in 2000 . From 1989- 1999 was the Associate Director of the Environment Program of The MacArthur Foundation .In 1999 was a joint appointment as senior forestry advisor to The World Bank. In 1983 he worked for 3 years as an agroforester in Haiti as part of a national USAID Agroforestry program. Previous to that he was a technical advisor to Appropriate Technology International. Michael was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Paraguay from 1979-1982 working in forestry, apiculture, and agricultural projects. Traveled extensively and worked throughout Latin America, Asia, and parts of Africa and speaks Spanish, Guarani, Portuguese, Creole and French. Holds a Masters of Forest Science from Yale and has published numerous books and publications. He has received the Skoll award , the Schwab award for social entrepreneurship and Forest Trends was awarded the MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions.
