Biography
hara, is the solo project of Indonesian singer-songwriter, anthropologist and gardener, Rara Sekar. Drawing inspiration from folk, Indonesian traditional music, ambient sounds, and field recordings, hara’s work explores themes of ecology, the climate crisis, womanhood, grief, and collective care, while honoring Javanese rituals and songs. She focuses on public education and community engagement such as wild food foraging, garden-to-table cooking, and potlucks as part of her performances. hara’s current project, Kabut Putih (White Fog), revives a 1971 song written by a female political prisoner from the 1965 Indonesian genocide. A collaboration with Dialita, a choir whose members are women political prisoners or the families of victims of the 1965 genocide, the release of the song is accompanied by a life-long open call that engages the public to critically reflect on our history and foster collective healing through art and activism.
