Roberto Gutiérrez chairs the Social Enterprise Knowledge Network (SEKN), an alliance of 10 universities throughout Ibero America, and directs the Social Enterprise Initiative in the School of Administration at the Universidad de los Andes where he is an Associate Professor. He received a Ph.D. in Sociology from Johns Hopkins University and, in 2000, an Academic Excellence Award from the school for his research and teaching. He has published articles about alliances, social enterprises, education, and development in popular media and academic journals —among them the American Sociological Review, the Review of Educational Research, the Journal of Management Education, and the Stanford Social Innovation Review. Recently he was co-editor of the book Effective Management in Social Enterprise: Lessons from Business and Civil Society Organizations in Ibero America (Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 2006).
