Biography

Director Strategic Partnerships, Fundación Escuela Nueva, building a coalition of global multi-sector partners leading a global movement to change the lives of the underserved by extending Escuela Nueva Activa™ model globally. Also, Consulting firm owner: Smith Orr & Associates.
Former: Executive Director, Kravis Leadership Institute, visiting professor, Claremont McKenna College Psychology Department and adjunct professor and recipient of “Faculty Member of the Year” (2011), Peter F. Drucker/Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management, Claremont Graduate University (CGU).
Sarah has held top/senior positions in social sector organizations located in New York, Texas, Pennsylvania, and California, such as the United Way, and has founded several nonprofit organizations. She co-edited Improving Leadership in Nonprofit Organizations (Jossey-Bass, 2003), and authored chapters, “Soul-Based Leadership” and “Transformational Leadership.” Book chapter “Women Directors in the Board Room,” is in Boardroom Realities (Jossey-Bass, 2008). The Drucker Difference, (McgrawHill, 2009) includes Sarah’s chapter “The Twenty-First Century: The Century of the Social Sector.” In Press: “The Role of the Social Entrepreneur in Economic Development,” The Role Of Entrepreneurs In The Political Economy Of The Pacific Rim (Nanjing, China: Nanjing University Press, 2015).
She is a certified practitioner and Advisory Board member, Connective Leadership Institute; a certified coach, Hudson Institute of Coaching. As founding Executive Director, led start-up of Leadership California. Plus service in numerous community and academic roles, including chair, Board of Scholars, Vail Leadership Institute; board member, National Women’s Hall of Fame.
