Biography

Suyen is the Executive Director of the Colmena Fund, a new independent fund dedicated to accelerating the power of women in formal political spaces across the Global South, with a particular focus on supporting women from most marginalized backgrounds. She is a political leader, human rights activist and feminist with over 15 years of leadership experience in politics. Former president of UNAMOS a Nicaraguan progressive political party. She has suffered persecution and has been unjustly and arbitrarily imprisoned on two occasions. In 2021 as a result of a wave of brutal government repression by the Nicaraguan state she was imprisoned for 606 days with other opposition figures, civic leaders, and was deported and illegally deprived of her nationality.

In 2022, Suyen was awarded the Human Rights Award for outstanding political courage by the Progressive Alliance and in 2023 the Global Women’s Institute at George Wash
