Biography

Sylvia Acan is a born of Gulu District who was abducted from patong village at the age of 12 years. On return from the camp, she was lucky to be among those that were taken back to school and attained a diploma in social work and social administration from Makerere University. She was employed as a psychosocial support officer in the IDP camps and worked with Norwegian Refugee Council where she was offering psychological support to her peers among other roles.
On closure of Norwegian Refugee Council’s work in the IDP camps in Northern Uganda, she saw that the need to continue supporting her peers was still huge and there were still high suicidal rates especially among the women due to the trauma from the war. This inspired her and five other female survivors started the Golden Women Vision.
