Biography

Tony Long is CEO of Global Fishing Watch (GFW) an NGO that creates and publicly shares knowledge about human activity at sea so that the ocean and its resources can be managed sustainably. He brings a wealth of maritime security, conservation, and leadership experience to his role. Before joining GFW, he directed The Pew Charitable Trusts’ global campaign to end illegal fishing, leveraging an ambitious combination of policy, technology and enforcement tools. He joined the nonprofit sector after 27 years with the British Royal Navy where he commanded HMS BLYTH and HMS MONMOUTH. He has taught at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom and provided planning and policy support to the head of the Navy and government ministers. A specialist in maritime surveillance, has spent extensive time at sea, including patrols throughout the Atlantic Ocean, Persian Gulf, Indian Ocean and the Far East. He holds a master’s degree in defence studies from King’s College London.
