Overview

Rampant information disorder—misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech—threatens progress on justice and equity, effective governance, climate action, health, and many other societal goals. Information disorder also impedes collective problem-solving and compromises social cohesion.

The Skoll Foundation supports social innovations that build resilience to information disorder, bolster trusted information sources, and realign the incentives of technology platforms to better serve democratic values and the public good.

Incentivize The Public Good

Media Democracy Fund’s Disinformation Defense League advances a racially equitable digital society where social media platforms reduce disproportionate harm to people of color and shift incentives of technology platforms for the public good. DDL members helped advance the American Data Privacy and Protection Act, a bipartisan online privacy bill. DDL’s policy platform calls for a strategic set of solutions to combat disinformation and build a media ecosystem that serves the public interest by promoting accurate news and information, protecting civil and human rights, and fostering an informed, equitable electorate across all languages.

Digital Action mobilized civil society and digital rights activist organizations to shape the landmark EU Digital Services Act. In 2023, Digital Action launched the Global Coalition for Tech Justice, bringing together more than 200 member organizations from 55 countries to call on technology platforms to better serve citizens within democracies, particularly those from marginalized communities.

Information Disorder Resilience

The Africa team of WITNESS is building clusters of mis- and disinformation community vanguards consisting of activists, human rights defenders, and journalists with the skills and tools to neutralize the potency of mis- and disinformation and uphold the truth. It designs trainings, tip sheets, blog posts, and explainer videos on the role of mis- and disinformation in undermining democratic principles and how to combat these trends and create trustworthy video documentation.

Meedan develops and operates Check, an open-source software platform for collaborative fact-checking deployed by more than 50 newsrooms and fact-checking organizations. Check runs misinformation tiplines on closed messaging networks including WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger and has improved citizen access to verified information during natural disasters, public health emergencies, and elections in Brazil, the Philippines, Mexico, the United States, and India.
