About the Opportunity
The Strategic Growth (SG) team is charged with raising mission-aligned funding to support B Lab Global and B Lab U.S. & Canada. In a time of rapid growth for the B Corp movement, the Strategic Growth team is implementing a multi-year, multimillion dollar fundraising strategy designed to accelerate our fundraising efforts and grow our philanthropic pipeline. At B Lab Global, we use philanthropy to build products, tools, and standards ahead of the market and to support our movement building work (public policy, capacity building, narrative shift, evaluation and research). At B Lab U.S. & Canada, philanthropy is used to support and mobilize the B Corp community and advance three pillars of change: climate justice, racial equity, and stakeholder governance. Philanthropy enables B Lab to keep social impact at the center of our work to make business a force for good.
The SG team currently raises about $5 million annually. Earned revenue, through our certification and verification (C&V) of B Corps, makes up the majority of our income. As the movement grows, we anticipate that philanthropy will be used primarily to support our movement building work and earned income will cover the ongoing costs of verification and impact management. To date, B Lab’s primary sources of philanthropic funding have come from private foundations and individuals closely aligned with B Lab’s mission. We expect this trend to continue, and will prioritize securing unrestricted and loosely restricted funding wherever possible.
The Development Writer, Grants and Donor Communications is internally referenced as our ‘Development Manager, Writing & Communications’ and is a level 4 role. The role will create compelling narratives and reports that engage and inspire current and prospective funding partners. They will be responsible for crafting and managing the Strategic Growth team’s written content, including grant reports, impact stories, and other collateral. Day to day activities will range from writing technical reports to inspiring case studies to donor email outreach and meeting talking points. In addition to the rest of the Strategic Growth team, this role will work with the Global Communications team, and various program teams at B Lab Global and B Lab U.S. & Canada, among others.
The ideal candidate is a creative, compelling communicator who has the ability to convey complex information in a clear and accessible manner. We are looking for someone with excellent writing skills and demonstrated experience creating content for diverse funder audiences, including foundations and major donors. They should have experience with and interest in writing about the economy, systems change, and the role of business. They should be adept at working collaboratively and asynchronously on a globally distributed and remote-first team. This position will support the whole Strategic Growth team as needed, working across revenue streams and multiple funder pipelines. This position reports to the Director of Development and Strategy.
