Introducing “The Journey to Transformation,” a two-part series in the Stanford Social Innovation Review

Philanthropy has long invested in solutions to societal challenges like climate change and inadequate health care. Transforming entire ecosystems requires more investment in social innovators who can build bridges across sectors and between disparate parts of a system to drive collective action and impact—all with a greater emphasis on equity, trust, and partnership.

None of us can do this work alone. That’s why the Skoll Foundation came together with several of our partners to share the models and approaches that advance social transformation.

In Part I of this two-part series—“Social Innovation and the Journey to Transformation”—we explore proven strategies for driving change, including system orchestration, collaborative funding, government partnerships, mission-aligned investing, reimagined storytelling, and evaluation and learning. Then, in Part II: “Orchestrators of Change,” we offer two compelling case studies that showcase how social innovators and their partners across sectors have deployed these approaches to drive true systems change through collective action.

Finally, in the last article—“From Margin to Mainstream”—we argue that mainstreaming the principles and practices of social innovation across all sectors is the best way to tackle the accelerating global challenges in front of us. We discuss three high-potential opportunities to take the field to the next level: build public narratives about why and how social innovation works; attract resources and champions; and grow the social innovation ecosystem through coalitions and system orchestration.

The time is now for philanthropy to align the speed and scale of our investments with the scope of the global challenges that social innovators seek to address. We hope this series will spark fresh thinking and new ideas for how we can create durable systemic change quickly and together.

We invite you to explore the articles below, share them with those who may find the ideas useful, and reach out to us and our partners to join the conversation.
